Programs At Christ Church-Sherrill

Our programs highlight our mission and ministry, so that we are a welcoming community for all people on faith journeys in service  with others and with God.  Everything we do is empowered by this.

ON-GOING EVENTS:

WORSHIP......a time to praise and pray, to fellowship and celebrate the presence of God in Christ Jesus each week...music, meaningful proclamation....you are always welcome!

SUNDAY SCHOOL....a time for younger Christians to learn what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in a workshop setting......

YOUTH GROUP.....time for fellowship, games, mission, and working together in being disciples of Jesus Christ.....

DDSO WORSHIP...a once-a-month fellowship and worship experience for the Developmentally Disabled, their families, support givers, and friends, with singing, proclamation, prayer and refreshments....open to all

SEASONAL EVENTS:

SUPER BOWL FOOD DRIVE....the Sundays up to and including Super Bowl Sunday, collecting canned goods and hunger awareness in January and February....

SUPER BOWL SUBS...a program of our youth group, Made-to-order Sub Sandwiches picked up on Super Bowl Sunday, all proceeds to Mission.

TRI-CHURCH ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE....marking the beginning of Lent, Three Churches, Christ Church, First UMC Oneida, and St Paul's, Oneida, worshiping together...

LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS.....dinner and fellowship of soup and bread, with a donation towards mission each Wednesday of Lent...

MEN'S BREAKFAST....Palm Sunday morning....worship with Holy Communion, then breakfast and fellowship, followed by an interesting talk

HOLY WEEK SERVICES....A service of Communion on Maundy Thursday and our Holy Week Cantata on Good Friday, commemorating the death and resurrection of Christ....

MOTHER'S DAY BREAKFAST.....Usually a week prior to Mother's Day......a festive breakfast for all the women of the church,,,a time of fellowship and food and then a speaker.....

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL......Mid to Late June.....A celebration of Strawberries, Summer Food, and Fellowship.....

TRI-CHURCH SUMMER SERVICE.....Usually in August......a time to share in a unique time of worship with our Friends from First UMC Oneida and St Paul's UMC, Oneida...

RUMMAGE SALE.....sponsored by the United Methodist Women.....May and October....treasures to be found.....all sold for Missions!

CHRISTMAS FANTASY FAIR...sponsored by the United Methodist Women....Mid-November......A church-wide time to share crafts and food and fellowship....plus pie and coffee; lunch served on Saturday.....

THE LIVING NATIVITY....presented by the Youth of Christ Church....The second Weekend in December.....telling the Christmas Story...live donkey, sheep and cow..... live music... complimentary refreshments indoors following the Pageant.... celebrating the reason for the season....

THE CHRISTMAS CANTATA...presented by the Choir of Christ Church.....the Sunday before Christmas Day as our worship.....a musical sharing of the Birth of the Messiah....

CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP......at 7 PM.....the carols, the scripture, Holy Communion, the Birth of Jesus, the Word Made Flesh.....

Our Missions

Two groups are primarily responsible for our outreach and giving in service to others: our United Methodist Women group and the Church Council.

The United Methodist Women's Group supports:

Red Bird Mission……an agency that supports families and persons in rural Appalachia;

UMW Conference Mission…..supports on-going mission and ministry in the life of the United Methodist Church; 

The Root Farm……an local organization affiliated with Upstate Cerebral Palsy that does equine therapy;

Heritage Farms in Bouckville…… supports individuals with disabilities; 

The Neighborhood Center in Utica..... dedicated to the improvement and spiritual growth of those in the city;

ARC in Oneida; 

Gateway in Williamsville..... an organization that supports families in western New York with behavioral health and community-based services; 

Folts Home in Herkimer..... a United Methodist affiliated Home for the Aging.

In past years the UMW has also contributed to organizations as needs become evident and resources are available. 

English and Spanish language bibles are donated to the Mohawk Correctional Facility.

Loving Blankets and prayer shawls are made by UMW members and given to individuals and organizations in need.

Health Kits are donated and assembled by church members. 

A Christmas Tree is decorated with donations of winter hats, mittens and gloves to be given to children of all ages at our local elementary schools and BOCES and also to adults in need in Utica. 

The UMW also provides camperships for children associated with Christ Church who wish to attend Casowosco Camp, a United Methodist Camp on Owasco Lake. 

Financial resources for UMW contributions are generated through a number of activities that welcome people from the area into the church building: The Christmas Fantasy Fair; church suppers; rummage sales; and special offerings of materials.

The Church Council, the oversight group for all church activities, receives requests for support.               

The church has had a long relationship with Maxwell House, a facility for individuals recovering from addictions, and the Council has given money and materials for the House and to individuals  associated with the House.

We have also supported the West Side Mission and Missionary and the East Side Mission in Utica and we continue to be open to where God calls us to Mission in our Community.....
